self-directed mfa
I started looking into MFA programs, but none of them were really what I wanted to study. I think that, for me, I also only want an MFA as a focused, organized opportunity for learning and creating, so it occurred to me that maybe I can just make up my own.
I want to do a multidisciplinary MFA in Weird Girl Art, Japanese Fiction-In-Translation, Transcendental Minutiae in Narrative, Fruit On Film (as some of my initial ideas). I want to take short courses and workshops from all different types of creatives, write some songs, stories, and a novel, go to concerts, do performance art, teach other people a bizarre class I designed. I want it to match the same complexity, length of study, and results as a typical MFA, but I want to create it all myself.
I am in the process of figuring out what I want this to look like (2026-27) and intend to start in 2027-28.
first novel:
paper church
As of March 2026, I am just finishing a novel about 5 corporate workers set over the course of a single day in a static location. The hook is that it’s the day the apocalypse really gets going - the city is literally on fire, the governments have shut down, businesses everywhere are closing, and schools and hospitals are on strike. The characters are still at work for their own reasons, and through the course of the day, they reckon with the death of the corporate job and what could be next.
I intend to start querying in April-May 2026.
